Preparing for your Shoot

Planning for your shoot can greatly affect the results and your satisfaction of your portraits.  A good portrait takes planning, they don’t just happen. And as the photographer, we don’t control all the aspects of what makes a great portrait. You control some of the conditions that help to make your portraits GREAT.

WHAT TO BRING:

Several extra outfits (while you may not wear every outfit, it is good to have several on hand) Casual and formal outfits Matching shoes (for full-length poses) Long sleeves and solid colors help keep the focus on you Make-up (for touch ups), hair suppliesCandy to use as treats for children.

GETTING READY FOR YOUR PORTRAIT SESSION

*Females: Do makeup before you come.  You may bring foundation and eye makeup for touchups if you need it. –Be sure to fix your eyebrows if you need to – try not to over pluck

PLEASE: if you have your hair highlighted – get your roots done.

Try on clothing to make sure it fits properly. Never assume we can make clothes look like they fit

*Do your nails (clear or neutral colors work best)

*Men: be sure to shave the night before
*Limit exposure to the sun a few days before your photo session to avoid sunburns or tan lines

*Avoid getting a new hairstyle or cut right before your session instead, select a comfortable style you know looks good.  Bring a clip so if you want a few poses with your hair up it won’t be hard to do.

*We also suggest you look in the mirror for a while and practice how you want to smile and pose.  When you are confident that you know how you look the best it is easily to capture a remarkable portrait.

*Picking a Location.  The location you pick determines the background of your shoot.  We can not make your location look amazing unless it already poses some scenic qualities.

*Eye Glasses  can cause unattractive glare in your eyes and on the lenses. Removal of glasses glare can be expensive.  We can work with you if you feel your glasses are a part of your personality, but if you often wear contacts please wear them for your shoot.

*Pick a main portrait style and let us know how you want to be captured.  We are also open to suggestions for poses, if you have seen something you like feel free to tell us what you want. This should be an experience that you have some control over so that you will have pride in the result.

YOU ALSO NEED TO CHOOSE A MAIN PORTRAIT STYLE

PHOTOJOURNALISM  -  This is a more bold crisp style that focuses on capturing what is actually going on, or how people really act.  It is used to capture “moments”.

TRADITIONAL POSE -  This is used in a lot of family portraits and seniors.  The family is usually posed close together.  This is done for all group photographs with over 8 people.

DRAMATIC POSE –  These tend to look more "bold" and "serious".  Many Dance Studios perfer this look for their groups.

ART PHOTOGRAPHY -  These are things that you would see in art magazines – not photography magazines – they focus more on the balance of the image and can be very close up.  We do a few of these on our own but if there is something you want we can do it.  This can be used with family pictures – with family more spread out and relaxed over a landscape – rather than a closer shot.

FUN PHOTOGRAPHY – These are the more fun and silly poses – These can include action shots, different expressions and poses.  We always try to do a few of theses shots capture your uniqueness, depending on how lively your personality is.
